Sticking to Goals with Stacey Michelsen

Growing up with older siblings can definitely involve some growing pains, but for Stacey Michelsen, it provided the foundation for her approach as an athlete: each day was another day to get better, and as a child, it was all about trying to catch up to her two older sisters. Watching her sisters play field hockey -- an exciting, fast-paced and high-skilled sport -- Stacey knew she wanted to throw everything she had into becoming one of the best players in the sport.

After attending St Cuthbert's College in Auckland, Michelsen was selected for the Black Sticks in June 2009. In February 2012, she was named the 2011 Junior Player of the Year by the International Hockey Federation.

“We’ve all heard the phrase ‘There’s no I in team’, but when it comes to playing in a team sport, I find trying to better your individual game raises your team’s chances for victory. A better player is a better player -- it’s all about how you apply your improvements to your team’s game. Whether you are trying to get quicker or stronger, it is important to raise the bar a little every day."

“Be a better teammate by setting personal goals every day.”

In her continued aspiration to win gold, Stacey keeps focused on her day-to-day mindset. Especially when it comes to injuries. One of her biggest challenges occurred in 2013 when she injured her knee. No longer as physically capable as before, she had to adjust her game. She learned to not get overly frustrated with setbacks as they are always going to be part of returning from injury.

We love watching Stacey take to the field and fully support her in continuing to bring New Zealand’s women’s team gold!

FIELD ULTIMATE FF

“Apparel and footwear are huge factors in allowing me to train and compete. Good footwear in hockey is so crucial as it is played on different surfaces, with a lot of change of direction and requires a lot of running! A shoe that allows me to perform at my best is a must!

When playing hockey, I wear the ASICS Field Ultimate FF turf shoes. These are perfect as they provide enough support for my knee, but are also light and have excellent grip.”
