ASICS Athlete Codie Taylor

Codie Taylor and His Love for the Game

Raised by a family of rugby players, Codie Taylor connected with the sport from a young age while growing up in Feilding and Levin. He followed in the footsteps of his father, a rugby and rugby league player, finding a love for it that propelled him into a career on the field. As a member of the Junior All Blacks squad in 2011 the team went on to win a World Championship title.

An unfortunate injury in 2013 gave Taylor a hard obstacle early in his career and he found himself buying time between 2012-2015 to get consistent game time. But he trusted that the work he put in would eventuate into opportunity. That patience and dedication paid off when he was named to the All Blacks squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. He’s since continued to represent the All Blacks and is an established member of the Crusaders as a hooker.

Taylor pushes himself to be the best player he can by finding motivation from his family, “I love the game of rugby and love the pursuit of being the best I can be. My family is a huge motivator for me, knowing what I do gives my wife and kids opportunities we may have not had if I wasn’t a professional athlete.” Through the tough times of training hard he stays in it knowing, “There is always something good that comes from hard work and dedication.”

"Becoming a pro takes a lot of hard work but enjoyment has to be a big part of what drives you. You also have to fall in love with doing what others don’t."

Playing at a professional level makes taking the time for maintaining a sound mind especially important. Taylor recognises the significant mental challenges from criticism, high pressure moments, and always having to perform. “For me having a process to deal with the pressure has helped and also having a supporting family and an outlet away from the game where I can switch off.”

The Gear that Keeps Codie Taylor Rugby Ready

"For me, I wear the Tight Five boot while I play which is the best boot I have worn period. I can get a brand new pair on game day and there is no need to break it in. It’s comfy from the first wear.

That’s the same with all of their boots. For training, I wear the Menace form ground boots which are awesome as well and don’t require breaking in.

I have had calf and Achilles issues in the past but the heal raise that ASICS have in their footwear keeps this from ever being a problem now."
