GT-2000 12 Podiatrist Reviews

A high performance stabilty shoe functional for various distances.

We gifted members of Podiatry NZ with a pair of the new GT-2000 12 shoes and asked them to test them out and offer some honest thoughts. Here's what they said.

"The ASICS GT-2000 12 shoe is my favourite GT-2000 so far. It is light, stable and feels soft underfoot. I personally have struggled with shoes in the past with having calf pain. But this shoe has the perfect amount of heel pitch and stability which means I no longer get calve pain. The toe spring has allowed me to spring off my forefoot faster, reducing the pressure."

"Most of my running is done on trails around Wanaka, some hard-packed gravel, and others that require an outsole with more traction. I have been wearing the TRABUCO and GT-2000 11 trail shoes for the past few years and I was keen to try another model.

Using the GT-2000 12 on the packed gravel tracks has been a lovely treat.  The forefoot flares noticeably added stability and efficiency at toe-off. I very much like the amount of cushioning in the heel and midfoot.  I prefer wearing a wider fit ASICS to stop my little toes getting squashed on longer runs and the GT-2000 12 certainly delivers that in the D width. This shoe will be my go-to for road and packed gravel."

"The first thing I noticed was how extremely lightweight they were when I took them out of the box. I was pleasantly surprised once I put them on my feet that they still felt lightweight considering how much midsole there is. The fit was snug and cushioned in the heels and the gusset hugs my midfoot well. The second thing I noticed was how cushioned it was on the plantar aspect of the heel. It is a nice change from the GEL™ in the past, as it appears to feel lighter and more comfortable. Thirdly, it felt like the shoe didn’t let me stay too long in heel strike before encouraging me to propel forward.  As I am usually a heel striker this felt odd at first, but after a while, I noticed I felt more efficient and it quickly became an enjoyable ride from heel to toe off.

I have a flatter foot than average and feel I need more help from a shoe to get the support I need when running the pavements. This shoe felt like it was supporting me in all the right places. This is a shoe I would definitely be recommending to people who are casual to high-performance runners. Due to the enjoyable ride and the lightness of the shoe, it will cater for many."

"The GT-2000 12 is a reliable, comfortable moderate stability shoe for different types of mileage. I could instantly feel the great cushioning put behind the PureGEL™ cushioning technology of the shoe. However, because I have symptomatic flat feet I could not detect the moderate support in the shoes. It has a super thin tongue and comfortable heel collar which is one of the main things I look for in shoes as this makes or breaks a lot of a runner’s performance. The thin tongue and comfortable heel collar are designed perfectly and I did not seem to have any troubles at all with my Achilles blistering while having a great snug yet comfortable feeling on the dorsal aspect of my mid-foot.

One of the features of GT-2000 that always stood out in my experience of running is how lightweight the model has been throughout the years, regardless of what visually seems to be a thicker midsole felt even lighter than the previous models.

I appreciated the low-profile, lightweight, and highly cushioned technology behind the new model. Compared to the previous models, I feel the increased cushioning and lightweight approach reduced the moderate support of the shoe. As mentioned before, having symptomatic flat feet, I feel the lack of medial posting of the new model. With this being said it can easily be fixed with orthotic use or switching to a higher supportive pair of shoes."

"I've had the pleasure of wearing the new GT-2000 12 over the past week, and I must say, it has quickly earned the top spot in my running shoe collection. As someone dealing with hyperflexible knees and significant overpronation, I've encountered my fair share of challenges when it comes to finding the perfect match for my feet, but this shoe has passed the test with flying colours.

The very first thing that struck me was the level of cushioning. The plush cushioning not only provides immediate comfort but continues to feel fantastic throughout my entire run. Its exceptional shock absorption has worked wonders for my knees, ensuring they stay comfortable and well-supported during my runs. The 3D GUIDANCE SYSTEM™ and the wider heel design work in perfect harmony with the cushioning, helping me to maintain a more neutral foot position and offering a rock-solid, stable base. Plus, there's ample space within the shoe, allowing me to seamlessly slip in my orthotics for that extra layer of control I need. I found the fit true to size and felt a snug fit the whole way from the forefoot through to the heel. Even with my narrow heels I did not need to lace lock.

Whether I'm hustling in the clinic all day or hitting the open road for a run, the GT-2000 12 has consistently had my back (or should I say, my feet). It's a shoe that envelops me in cushioned comfort and helps me reduce my risk of injury. Kudos to ASICS for crafting this exceptional running shoe!"

"The GT-2000 12 are extremely light and comfortable with a great new easy entry heel counter, seam-free mesh upper, they fit true to size, and the transition off the front of the shoe feels smooth and easy. I have worn ASICS running shoes for the past 25 years and competed in numerous triathlons, multisport, and running events over the years.

I love the stability and forward propulsion of the new GT-2000 12 and the increased cushioning whilst still being able to have a good feel of the ground. I have suffered with ongoing patellofemoral joint pain over the years and some shoes can exacerbate this, my knees have really enjoyed running in the GT-2000 and have not given me any niggles to date. The new GT-2000 has a good amount of sole flare without being too much that will trip you up. The medial sidewall and internal 3D GUIDANCE SYSTEM™ provide plenty of unobtrusive medial stability for those with mild-to-moderate stability needs throughout the length of the shoe yet did not hinder my more neutral running style. Overall, the new GT-2000 12 is a fantastic update from its predecessor in performance, stability, and comfort."

"The GT-2000 has always been a versatile trainer, but this new version could easily be used for longer easy runs and would be perfect for someone wanting a bit more stability during mid-stance on a faster tempo run. This is the first shoe I have tried from ASICS with the new FF BLAST™ PLUS cushioning unit and the spring I got at toe off was noticeable and welcomed. I was sceptical at first of ASICS removing the TRUSSTIC system from their shoes, but the 3D GUIDANCE SYSTEM™ provided the ideal amount of support for someone like me, an efficient runner but an overpronator.

I would highly recommend the GT-2000 12 to runners of all levels and for all distances and speeds. I would particularly say that if you are worried about wearing a support shoe due to the bulk and heaviness of them, the GT-2000 12 has none of this and your faster tempo runs will feel amazing if stability is something you look for in a running shoe."
