The GlideRide 2 is a neutral everyday trainer with a reinforced forefoot rocker that assists propulsion during gait. This version is lighter yet still has enough cushioning underfoot to take you from a 5km through to a marathon distance, making it a versatile option.
The forefoot rocker consists of a 30-degree toe spring angle, reinforced with dense EVA. This creates a unique feel during propulsion which for some encourages a quicker toe-off, and for others helps long runs feel easier as the shoe is designed to reduce energy expenditure.
The stiffened forefoot rocker means that less extension is required at the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint to achieve effective sagittal plane movement. Medically, this makes this shoe a great treatment option for several conditions.
Hallux rigidus is a perfect candidate throughout all stages. During the earlier phases of this condition, both the joint space and available range of motion is reducing. This leads to an increasingly painful and arthritic joint, which deteriorates with repeated movement. Typically around 60 degrees of 1st MPJ extension is required for efficient propulsion, but as the Glideride’s forefoot rocker reduces the amount needed it therefore manages both symptoms and helps to slow the condition's progression.
In late-state; if the joint no longer has any extension remaining it can in some cases become asymptomatic, however, as the function is reduced in the forefoot compensatory gait changes will occur. The Glideride can also be invaluable in these cases to help facilitate sagittal plane movement through functioning in place of the 1st MPJ, reducing the risk of overload further up the chain.
The same principles of offloading hallux rigidus apply for other forefoot conditions such as functional hallux limitus, hallux valgus, and for post-op recovery. As well as the forefoot, the midfoot, ankle, and achilles/calf also benefit from the rocker. Specifically osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Achilles tendinopathy are among some of the other conditions that can experience symptom reduction from wearing the Glideride.
